WHAT IS YBY?

A brand new personal and professional development programme to strengthen and enhance your CV. Using a mixture of experience rich self awareness workshops and volunteering, you develop yourself, to be your best you!

WHAT IS PERSONAL and PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?

Personal Development is anything an individual does to improve his or her learning, performance and / or achievements. It can be for personal, educational or career development reasons.

 WHY DO IT?

Why wouldn't you want to do it?! To have more friends, more fun and a better all round University experience. Do you want skills to help you understand yourself and other people better - leading to improved relationships both personally and professionally? Or do you just want skills to impress potential employers? Perhaps you want to make a difference and be part of something a bit more interesting than the normal university degree? If you answered yes, then come along to a YBY session and see for yourself. It's free to attend and you're under no obligation to carry on attending - although we think you will want to!

HOW MUCH TIME WILL I GET TO GIVE TO YBY?

Students who wish to go on the YBY programme will be given the opportunity to do as many or as little of the activities as they like. Each week we will be putting on one workshop which should last about two hours. However the course is up to you to develop yourself, so this will be a personal thing for you to decide. In addition, this year we will be having a volunteering element to the programme. Meaning that some workshops will be replaced by getting involved in local projects and potentially some on-campus volunteering.

WHAT SORT OF SESSIONS ARE THERE?

Last year's workshops included:

Art Drawing, NLP, Questioning Techniques, Assertiveness training, Negotiation training, Cultural awareness, orienteering and Interview Skills to name a few.

This year we will be adding in new sessions such as public speaking and confidence to the programme, whilst giving you oportunities to volunteer!

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS A SESSION OR DON'T ATTEND THEM ALL?

The skills learnt from the sessions you take part in, will be the skills you will end up with at the end of the year – this is the essence of Personal Development. You decide how much and what you get out of Your Best You! There is no register and you can attend whenever you like.

WHO IS YBY FOR?

All students at BU for free!

WHEN & WHERE IS YBY HELD?

Every Wednesday 3-5pm in the Learn Higher Room (next to the library)
(Please check website for changes in dates and times)

WHAT WILL I GET AT THE END OF IT?

The satisfaction of completion and the range of skills developed will be a great attribute on your CV.  You will receive a certificate if you wish and will have made some great friends. You will also get the chance to organise an end of year trip like the Italy one that last year's students arranged.
