FAQS - ORGANISATIONS

What is thehub?

thehub is an online interactive service matching Bournemouth University students and staff who want to get involved in volunteering with organisations who need them.

Where do the opportunities on thehub come from?

thehub hosts opportunities from any local, national or international organisation that conforms to our strict code of practice, ensuring at all times both the health & safety of the volunteer and the quality of  the volunteering opportunity. Internal university groups may also advertise on thehub.

Why use thehub?

There are approximately 14,000 students and 1,000 staff at Bournemouth University. Any student or member of staff can access thehub and so by advertising your opportunities on the site you can tap into a vast potential volunteering resource.

Is there a charge for using thehub?

Not at all! Registration and use of thehub is completely free. Once you have been approved as an organisation on the site you may start advertising your opportunities and you will not be charged for the use of the service.

What information do I need to provide to register on and use thehub?

To register on thehub you will need to complete an online form with your organisation’s details, including your address, email, contact names and numbers. You will also be asked to provide evidence of any policies you have regarding volunteers.

What if my organisation doesn’t have any volunteering policies?

Don’t worry – you will still be able to recruit volunteers through thehub. If you don’t have your own policies we will ask you to adopt those of thehub so that we can ensure we fulfil our duty of care towards our volunteers.

Can I only advertise volunteering opportunities on thehub?

In addition to volunteering opportunities you may also advertise any training sessions you are holding for which you require participants. We do not however, allow paid positions to be advertised on the site.

Is there a limit to the number of opportunities I can add?

No – you may add as many opportunities as you wish.

How will I know if any volunteers have applied for my opportunities?

When a volunteer has been approved on thehub to participate in an opportunity owned by your organisation, you will be contacted by email. You will be provided with the volunteer’s name, email address and phone number and some brief information on his/her skills and interests. It is then your responsibility to contact the volunteer and arrange starting and logistic details for the opportunity. Occasionally you may be contacted by thehub as soon as a volunteer applies for an opportunity (before he or she is approved) if we have any questions regarding the application which we need to discuss with you.

Does my organisation need to provide training for volunteers?

All those undertaking volunteering should have, at least, an induction session with the organisation to introduce them to the work and to the environment in which they will be placed. If necessary and appropriate, training should also be provided.

Again, this can vary, but generally you should provide for the volunteer:

  • An induction where the volunteer can find out more about your organisation and its policies - including, amongst other things, your health and safety policy and what to do if the volunteer has a problem. You should also introduce the individual to other staff and volunteers
  • A supervisor for the volunteer
  • Adequate training to be able to carry out the voluntary work, though the exact nature of the training will depend on the role
  • Ongoing support and supervision
