The University currently recycles all paper from offices, cardboard, plastic bottles from catering outlets, all glass from SU bars, toner cartridges, mobile phones, etc.
They have also worked with the local authorities to introduce a comprehensive co-mingled recycling service to all of our halls of residence where students can recycle all major recyclable materials.
The number of 1100 litre Eurobins required on campus for our general waste has been reduced from 80 to 45 thanks to these recycling initiatives. In 2006 they recycled 45.1 tonnes of white copier paper and 94.6 tonnes of mixed cardboard and glossy paper. They are currently considering options for introducing schemes for recycling/composting food waste and for battery recycling.
Work is also ongoing to reduce our impact on the environment, such as their transport planning which has led the university to have an award winning transport plan.
The students of the University can really make a difference to the recycling scheme and improve on previous years’ records. Here are a few ways to recycle:
· Make use of the university’s co-mingled recycling service if staying in halls of residence
· Reuse shopping bags
· Recycle clothing either by making them into something else or giving to charity
· Try to avoid buying disposable products
· Don’t buy heavily packaged goods
Keep to the motto; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
1/3 of what we throw away could be recycled, by just recycling glass and paper we would reduce the amount of rubbish we bury by 300,000 tonnes per year.
You can also help by joining in with Recycling Ronnie, a project set up to teach the next generation about the importance of recycling by going to primary schools and doing interactive workshops.
